What to Know Before Moving to Clinton

Nestled between Chelsea and the Upper West Side, Clinton is a diverse, vibrant, and affluent neighborhood. Learn more about this amazing community below.

Interesting Community History

Until about 30 years ago, Clinton (more commonly known as Hell’s Kitchen) had an infamous reputation. It was known for its working-class population of Irish Americans and was considered a rough-and-tumble place to live. The neighborhood apparently received its nickname from an officer observing a local riot: “Hell is a mild climate for this street. This place is Hell’s Kitchen.” However, with changes beginning in the 1990s, Clinton has dramatically transformed from a harsh neighborhood into one of New York City’s best communities. In fact, it’s ranked among the top three places to live in the Big Apple. From its poor and humble beginnings, the community of Clinton is now a magnet for artists, famous actors, and ambitious professionals!

Neighborhood Attractions

Known for its art, theater, and cuisine, Clinton is home to celebrities, aspiring artists, and young entrepreneurs alike. Right on Broadway’s door, the neighborhood is home to several theater companies that include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New World Stages, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, Stage 48, and more. And let’s not forget Restaurant Row, one of the biggest draws to this neighborhood. Everything from Thai to Afghan cuisine can be found along this famous stretch. There’s also the Javits Center, a renowned convention center, and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Along with these local attractions, the Lincoln Center, Central Park, and Times Square are all within walking distance of Clinton.
