What to Know Before Moving to the Financial District
The Financial District isn’t just about Wall Street’s iconic world-class commerce and industry. Living in FiDi provides a community-centered vibe that residents love.
History of the Financial District
The Financial District has a storied history. Long before this district became a financial powerhouse, it was settled by the Dutch in 1624 and named New Amsterdam. Thirty-six years later, in 1660, the British renamed it, New York. Colonists established Federal Hall as the nation’s first capitol building and it was there, in 1789, that George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States. Three years later, in 1792, the New York Stock Exchange was founded and is now the world’s largest equities exchange. The Fraunces Tavern Museum is where General George Washington said farewell to his officers after they won the Revolutionary War. And it was on September 11, 2001, that terrorists attacked the Financial District’s Twin Towers.
Types of Buildings
The Financial District’s densely urban landscape consists of historic buildings that are shadowed by some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. The spectacular 1,792 foot One World Trade Center has replaced the World Trade Center complex which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the world’s tallest all-office building. After 9/11, many office buildings were fully renovated and converted into residential co-ops, apartments, and lofts.
Neighborhood Amenities and Attractions
After the 9/11 attacks, redevelopment resulted in a major renaissance with new parks, memorials, museums, and multi-purpose buildings. The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum and Liberty Park were built in and around the Twin Towers’ foundations. The new state-of-the-art transit complexes, known as the Fulton Center and World Trade Center Transportation Hub with its $4 billion Oculus station, also house restaurants and shopping complexes.
The One World Trade Center observation deck offers magnificent 360-degree views as far as the eye can see. Historic Trinity Church, built in 1839, offers a window into the Financial District’s history. The former Customs Building is now the National Museum of the American Indian and other attractions include the New York City Police Museum and the Museum of American Finance. The many trendy restaurants and bars at the South Street Seaport Historic District are popular with after-hours workers and weekend tourists.
Get StartedPeople and Education
In the years since the 2001 terrorist attacks, the FiDi population has more than doubled and is now home to about 70,000 highly educated residents. One-third of those residents are millennials, aged 18-34. About 85% of residents age 25 and older have a college education and 40% of those college graduates have postgraduate degrees. Students who attend FiDi public and private schools earn higher than average math and reading achievement scores, and the high school graduation rate in the Financial District is 21% higher than the NYC average.
