What to Know Before Moving to NoHo

Considered one of the best neighborhoods in New York City, NoHo is hip, culturally rich, and home to some of the most desirable residences in the Big Apple.

Neighborhood Attractions

NoHo may be one of the smallest neighborhoods in New York City, but it’s still filled to the brim with cool shops, art galleries, eateries, and chic retail outlets. Composed of funky character and historic visuals – the architecture here is one of the many highlights – NoHo has no shortage of impromptu art installations, poetry readings, refreshing strolls, and hip eateries (more on that below). The Hole NYC showcases budding artists and contemporary artwork, while Merchant’s House Museum represents the only example of a fully-intact 19th century NYC home. Love theatre that engages both art and culture? The Public Theatre is a highly inclusive and artist-driven institution dedicated to highlighting important social issues.

Walkscore Info

When it comes to Manhattan, it’s hard to beat its overall high walkability. But as far as individual neighborhoods not only in the acclaimed borough but the entire city, NoHo is part of another class entirely. Simply put, it’s a walker’s paradise. From strolls to the park to evenings out on the town, the enclave is ideal for anybody sans car. And as for public transportation, residents are spoiled with some of the best in the City that Never Sleeps. Along with numerous bus lines and rail lines, there is an abundance of car-sharing options (from companies such as RelayRides, Hertz On Demand, and Zipcar). Like to bike? Bikeability is awesome here, and there’s even bike-sharing via companies like Citi Bike.

Types Of Buildings

From luxury homes to quaint buildings with cobblestone streets to Renaissance and Classical architecture, NoHo is home to distinctive and eclectic structures. The neighborhood underwent tremendous gentrification in the 2000s and 2010s, resulting in a large market of loft apartment conversions. These lofts are highly desirable and command a high premium. Representing the commercial history of New York City at the turn of the 20th century, the NoHo Historic District is made up of approximately 125 buildings. In 2003, the NoHo East Historic District was created, adding to the impressive collection of landmarked structures.

From famous artists (including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol) to celebrities (such as Emily Ratajkowski, Zachary Quinto, and Cynthia Nixon, to name just a few), the popular enclave is an interesting merger of culture, creativity, and retail. For those working in the Financial District and Midtown, NoHo provides a refreshing escape colored with gorgeous architectural design, artsy venues, and a plethora of fantastic dining, shopping, and nightlife options. For those of the more creative inclination, the community provides beautiful green spaces and stylish aesthetics that culminate in an engaging & inspiring muse. From sophistication to edgy elements, NoHo is both a stimulating and relaxed place to call home.

Notable Restaurants

The name of the game is relaxed, no-frills eats here. From taco trucks to cafes to food stands, NoHo excels at fashionable, cozy, and affordable dining (with a more subdued vibe compared to adjacent enclaves). The Smile serves up American and Mediterranean in a mellow basement setting, while Bohemian is a fantastic Japanese eatery (and possibly one of the best restaurants in Manhattan) hidden behind a butcher shop. Vic’s is a low-key Italian spot that makes fantastic drinks – definitely try the homemade limoncello. Lafayette Grand Café & Bakery offers French cuisine, with two notables being the duck and hot chocolate.
