Walkscore Info

When it comes to walkability, it doesn’t get much better than SoHo! Not only does it rate highly as a lot of Manhattan enclaves do, but it knocks it out of the park as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in NYC. Whether you want to take a stroll to your favorite vintage clothing store or art show, you can get there with ease. The community also scores high in public transportation, home to world-class bus lines and subway lines (approximately 10 of each). And if you’re into biking, well, this place is wonderful for that as well!

Types Of Buildings

Home to historically and visually beautiful cast-iron structures, virtually all of SoHo is part of the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District, which was made a Historic National Landmark in 1978. This area consists of 500+ buildings across 26 blocks, along with side streets that are paved with a quarried stone known as Belgian block. In the 1960s, many artists began moving into the abandoned warehouses and factories that peppered the neighborhood. Gentrification started to creep in during the 1980s, leading to renovated living spaces, art galleries, restaurants, stores, and more. These days most residences are loft spaces, co-ops, and walk-ups, which command high prices. They now represent some of the most desirable residences in New York City.

Culture And People

Stylish, artistic, bohemian… these are just a few words that describe the culture and people of SoHo. The 1960s saw an influx of influential artists and wordsmiths who occupied the many disused spaces in the area. Fast forward to the 1980s, and many art galleries and other establishments started to pop up. Now, as the heartbeat of the city, SoHo is the place to be for fashion, art, and entertainment. Spotting a number of celebrities – Arianna Huffington, Kirsten Dunst, Tiger Woods, and Jon Bon Jovi, to name a few – is not uncommon in the community. If you want to be right in the middle of the cultural mix, this is the neighborhood.
