What to Know Before Moving to the Upper East Side

Ready to learn more about the Upper East Side’s history, buildings, classic parks, superlative shopping, esteemed cultural institutions, and acclaimed schools?

Upper East Side History

In the mid-1800s, the Upper East Side was mainly farmland and by 1857, Central Park was completed. By the early 1900s, the neighborhood was transported into the Gilded Age when many landmark buildings were constructed. Today, six historic districts within the Upper East Side serve to maintain the neighborhood’s illustrious history. From the Rockefellers and Roosevelts to the Carnegies and Kennedys, some of the nation’s most famous families built mansions on the Upper East Side and contributed to its posh and prestigious vibe. The mansions and townhouses where they once lived are now some of the Upper East Side’s most sought-after buildings.

Types of Buildings

The main avenues, especially Madison Avenue, Park Avenue, and 5th Avenue are lined with mansions and elegant doorman buildings. The Upper East Side’s dark green awnings, lovely potted plantings at building entrances, and friendly doormen are signatures of the neighborhood. Quieter streets are lined with iconic townhouses and brownstones. But there are also newer luxury condo buildings, such as the Lucida, Brompton, and Laurel. Whether historic or modern, luxury amenities provide residents with every convenience. Closer to the East River, you’ll find many pre-war buildings and some high rises with more modest amenities. These buildings offer more affordable apartments – either for sale or for rent.

When it’s Time to Play, Shop, and Museum Hop

The Upper East Side offers world-class greenspace, museums, and shopping. To many, Central Park is Manhattan’s spiritual heart and soul. With 842 acres, the park is a paradise encompassing a tangle of walking, bike, and jogging paths; artificial lakes; 21 athletic fields; two ice-skating rinks; a famous zoo; acres of rolling meadows; and majestic trees. But other parks, such as Carl Schurz Park, East River Promenade, and John Jay Park also offer terrific greenspace amenities in the eastern part of the neighborhood. Asphalt Green is an athletic center that features everything from soccer matches to swimming lessons in the Olympic-size swimming pool.

From Madison Avenue’s gorgeous designer stores and boutiques that feature some of the world’s most legendary brands, to consignment stores that re-sell those famous labels at a fraction of the original price, the Upper East Side is a shopper’s paradise. Around Lexington Avenue and 3rd Avenue, you’ll find well-known retail chains like Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Target plus locally-owned home stores like Mecox Gardens and Sara Japanese Pottery.

Museum Mile on 5th Avenue between 82nd and 105th Streets is home to world-renowned museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Frick Collection, the Jewish Museum, the Museum for African Art, and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
