What to Know Before Moving to Chinatown

Looking to get a better feel for Manhattan’s Chinatown? Here are a handful of things you should definitely know before making your way to the unique neighborhood.

Neighborhood Amenities and Attractions

Along with a heavenly assortment of Chinese restaurants (along with other types of cuisine, more on that below), Chinatown offers unique market shopping adventures. For instance, you can find rare dong bei style foods – something that’s unheard of in most parts of the nation. Delicacies and fresh food abound and public transportation gets you to and from any destination with the convenience of many subway lines. This neighborhood is also teeming with arts and culture, so you’ll definitely be excited to explore. From the Museum of Chinese in America to Canal Street (with its open-air shopping experience) to Columbus Park, Chinatown provides an enriching lifestyle!

Walkscore Info

Walkability? It’s not only incredible here but the neighborhood ranks among the top five most walkable areas in New York City! Couple that with outstanding public transportation, and this is a walker’s paradise. That’s a great thing, considering that Chinatown is not exactly a car-friendly place to live. Take a stroll to a local park and peruse the various street markets along the way.

People and Culture

Home to about 100,000 residents, Chinatown has one of the oldest and largest populations of Chinese people outside of China. In recent years, however, there has been an influx of ethnic diversity. Between 2000 and 2010, the White population increased significantly. Cantonese culture is the dominant influence in this neighborhood, though there’s also been a large influx of Fuzhou people. Comprised of both residential and commercial areas, Chinatown is a popular spot for avid tourists and locals alike, culminating in a unique cultural experience.

Cost of Living

Though it is relatively less expensive than other Manhattan neighborhoods, Chinatown rentals have steadily gone up in price over the years. Speaking of rent, an overwhelming percentage of residents are renters. Despite this trend, there are still plenty of deals to be found. As with most other parts of Manhattan, median home values come in at a little under double the NYC overall median home value. But if you’re moving to this popular borough, you probably are well aware of the premium that comes with living in one of the most dynamic & appealing spots in NYC. With the numerous amenities, it’s worth the cost!

Notable Cuisine and Restaurants

Last but certainly not least – in fact, it won’t be surprising if this is one of the main reasons you want to move here – there is Chinatown’s legendary food. From Kwangtung style lobster to BBQ to soup dumplings, this neighborhood is a Chinese food lover’s paradise. Whether you’re looking for the ultimate take out or a fantastic sit-down experience, there are so many options! Hwa Yuan is a luxury option that specializes in Sichuan cuisine. Can’t get Cantonese food off your mind? Check out Ping’s, located on Mott Street. And Big Wong is the place to be for delicious roast pork BBQ. But don’t think it’s only about Chinese cuisine here. Over the years, there has been an influx of other phenomenal restaurants dedicated to Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean. If anything, you’ll have a hard time choosing what to eat!
