What to Know Before Moving to Garment District

As a major epicenter for clothing manufacturing, the Garment District is taking on a new life as one of New York City’s hidden residential gems.

Historical Tidbits

Established in the early 1800s, the Garment District was an apparel and fashion powerhouse for two centuries. By 1910, New York City had established itself as an apparel heavyweight, and the district helped to produce 40% of men’s clothing and a whopping 70% of women’s clothing in the U.S. Along with textiles, the Garment District became a huge retail center, which was centered around Macy’s department store. In recent years, developers have seized the opportunity to turn manufacturing spaces into stunning homes, from spacious condos to high ceiling lofts. These unique residences, along with the neighborhood’s prime Manhattan location, have attracted many newcomers.

Amenities And Attractions

From architecture to fashion & art to cuisine (more on that later), there are plenty of fun things to do in the Garment District! For starters, the neighborhood is home to several art galleries, theatres, and more than 90 studios to explore. There’s also Midtown Comics, one of the biggest comic book shops in the US. For architectural buffs, take a stroll and marvel at the magnificent factory skyscrapers and loft buildings. Though not technically a part of the neighborhood, Bryant Park is adjacent to the Garment District’s eastern corner. The beloved park covers nearly 10 acres, offering a wide assortment of year-round outdoor activities.

In fact, it ranks as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the entire city, scoring a 98/100. This walkability means you’ll be able to easily take care of your errands and enjoy the community on foot. Public transportation is also top-notch. The neighborhood offers no less than 44 bus lines and several subway lines for convenient transit. Enjoy riding your bicycle? The Garment District scores high in bikeability, too!

Types Of Buildings

Filled with architectural and fashion industry history, the Garment District is home to the highest concentration of skyscraper factories on the globe. In more recent years, developers have breathed new life into disused commercial spaces. Converting them into modern condos and lofts with high ceilings – this was a necessary feature to accommodate large machinery for clothing production, but now it serves as a highly desirable residential feature that provides a ton of spaciousness – these former manufacturing areas now serve as wonderful living spaces for ambitious professionals and growing families alike. The community is also home to one of the best design schools, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), as well as Penn Station and Macy’s Herald Square Building.

Notable Restaurants

It’s easy to think there’s not much in the way of eats in the Garment District, but we’re happy to say that’s simply not true (anymore)! With more incoming residents, several fantastic restaurants have popped up. Here are some of the top picks. MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes offers everything in the name, along with delicious chicken and veggie options. For a more upscale dining experience, Casa Nonna specializes in Italian (and also has a pizza bar). Beyond Sushi serves a diverse vegan (and kosher) menu, while The Restaurant offers a fresh spin on American cuisine. And for tasty tacos – it’s said to have the best carnitas tacos in New York City – Alan’s Kitchen Mexican Cuisine is the place to eat!
