What to Know Before Moving to Manhattanville

Offering an intriguing blend of intellectuals, artists, and more, there’s a synergy that’s unmistakable in Manhattanville. Let’s get more acquainted with this unique neighborhood.

Neighborhood Attractions

Two of the most appealing things about this neighborhood, other than the restaurants, stores, and more affordable housing (particularly compared to other Manhattan enclaves), are West Harlem Piers Park and Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. Opened in 2008, West Harlem Piers Park connects to Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, affording cyclists and joggers easy access all the way to Battery Park. Two other big draws land in the culinary and music categories, Dinosaur BBQ and the Cotton Club (more on that below). History buff? Hamilton Grange National Memorial provides a glimpse into the home life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers. And, of course, there’s Columbia University.

Walkscore Information

Wow… if you like to walk around your neighborhood, you’ll love living in Manhattanville! As with many Manhattan neighborhoods, it scores exceptionally high in the walkability department. Do you know what scores even better? Public transit. Along with world-class public transportation, there are plenty of car-sharing options from the likes of RelayRides, Zipcar, Enterprise CarShare, and Hertz On Demand. The one downside? The neighborhood’s bikeability score is pretty low. But if you don’t cycle much, you’ll be more than happy with the accessibility here.

Types Of Buildings

In recent years, Manhattanville has undergone revitalization. Along with regal brownstones and gorgeous pre-war buildings, there’s a bevy of converted-warehouse condos and refreshed apartments. As Columbia University expanded into the neighborhood, it purchased wide sections of real estate, which has led to gentrification. Broadway serves as the main commercial part of the city, home to many stores, bodegas, and restaurants.

People And Culture

From academics to painters to hard workers, Manhattanville acts as a fascinating intersection of intellectual musings and blue-collar grit. It’s not unusual to bump into faculty and students from Columbia University while grabbing fresh poultry or perusing one of the many bodegas or discount stores. Originally an industrial neighborhood – many Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban immigrants made their way here in the 1980s – it has since become much more gentrified. Now, it’s taken on the title of a culturally rich haven for those seeking affordability and easy access to the university, as well as an assortment of amenities for a nice quality of life.

Notable Restaurants

Along with being home to Fairway, one of the best supermarkets in the city, Manhattanville offers a delectable selection of eateries, restaurants, and cafes. Many eateries have a Dominican flavor to them, while places like The Hudson River Café offer fantastic views of the George Washington Bridge. Known for its world-class barbecue, Dinosaur BBQ is an award-winning establishment that keeps drawing eager eaters from around the globe. Got an appetite for ramen, dumplings, and sake? Jin Ramen serves up some of the best in Manhattan! The miso ramen comes highly recommended. Love jazz? Listen to your heart’s content over brunch or dinner at the world-famous Cotton Club.
