What to Know Before Moving to Midtown South

Offering beautiful homes and stunning urban views, along with plenty of attractive job opportunities, Midtown South has been enjoying rising popularity.

Midtown South Neighborhoods

The community is actually what’s called a macro-neighborhood. It’s comprised of several neighborhoods that include the following: Chelsea, Hudson Yards, The Garment District, Greeley Square, Herald Square, Kips Bay, Koreatown, Murray Hill, and Rose Hill. In general, Midtown South starts below 42nd Street in the south-central portion of Midtown Manhattan, but this is only one definition, with another definition establishing its boundaries as 45th Street to the north, 29th Street to the south, Lexington Avenue to the east, and Eighth Avenue to the west. In any event, this macro-neighborhood is home to a diversity of attractions, amenities, and more!

Attractions And Amenities

With the Empire State Building standing as the beacon of the community, Midtown South is home to a plethora of New York City’s finest landmarks and institutions. Attractions and prime destinations include Pennsylvania Station (the busiest intercity railroad station in the western hemisphere), the Flatiron Building, Hudson Yards in Chelsea, NYU Langone Medical Center, Koreatown (home to popular restaurants, beauty salons, and more), and Macy’s Herald Square. It also has a high concentration of gyms – there are approximately 36 gyms for every 10,000 households – and health-conscious establishments, which has landed the macro-neighborhood (combined with Midtown) at the top of the list for healthiest communities in NYC.

Walkscore Info

As with many parts of the borough, Midtown South offers exceptional walkability. If you’re coming from another city, you’ll be pleased to hear that you won’t need a car to get around and perform most errands. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a nice meal at your favorite local restaurant or take a refreshing stroll to a park, you can move about conveniently by foot. As far as public transportation goes, it’s topnotch. Home to Penn Station, the neighborhood provides many bus lines and rail lines for easy travel. Do keep in mind that, since this is a business-oriented section of Manhattan, there can be a lot of traffic congestion.

Notable Cuisine

When it comes to cuisine, Midtown South is amazing! We could dedicate this section to Koreatown alone, with all its fantastic restaurants. From Hangawi (that requires diners to take off their shoes before shimmying up to the table) to Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to authentic Korean fare. The macro-neighborhood is also home to some of the best vegetarian and vegan establishments, making for a terrific pick for those that have a plant-based diet. As mentioned before, Midtown South (along with Midtown) is the healthiest section of NYC. Some popular restaurants include Izakaya MEW (Japanese), The Restaurant (American cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients), and Casa Nonna (more upscale Italian).
